Health Tips: Keeping Your Body & Mind In Shape

Health and wellness have been at the top of most people’s minds in recent months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a society, we have become more conscious of how we interact with others, our cleanliness, and how we protect ourselves and our loved ones from falling ill. Health is important and in the absence of any congenital conditions, having a healthy lifestyle is necessary in promoting longevity, productivity, and even preventing disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the leading cause of death in the United States is from heart disease with 1 in 4 deaths being the result of some sort of cardiovascular disease. This is why making changes to some of our habits can help us build our immune system and enjoy better health.

  • Drink water.

  • Get adequate sleep.

Sleep is extremely important because it allows our bodies to recover from our busy day. Better sleep promotes the reduction of stress and improves memory. It also gives your body the ability to fight against infection.

  • Exercise regularly.

Engaging in moderate exercise for 20 – 40 minutes per day has been proven to be significantly beneficial to the body according to research done by the [insert who researched]. Exercise can help a person maintain a healthy weight which lowers the risk of heart disease amongst others. In fact, walking for 15 to 20 minutes daily is already a significant benefit to your body by providing a good source of energy and strengthening your muscles and bones.

  • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.

We have all heard the phrase “we are what we eat”. This is actually a medically supported statement. What we eat affects our overall health and appearance. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is said lower blood pressure, lower blood cholesterol levels, and decrease the risk of certain types of cancer.

  • Avoid smoking.

Not smoking increases life expectancy, lowers your risk of diabetes, lets blood vessels function better, and helps prevent heart and lung disease or cancer.

  • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation.

Drinking alcohol in moderation prevents immediate injuries resulting from belligerent behavior, but it can also have long term benefits such as reducing the risk of ischemic stroke, lessening the risk of developing and dying of heart disease, and reducing the risk of diabetes.

  • Try to minimize stress.

This is easier said than done. However, decreasing stress levels is beneficial in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and asthma.
